The Breath Within:
Zen Breathing Exercises for Inner Purification
(6 hours)
Sunday, November 9
9:30 AM – 5 PM
Taught by Yoshi Nakano (Instructor since 1989)
Breath is an essential biological activity for our longevity and wellbeing. Life and death can depend on how we breathe. The Japanese letter (息) for the word breath is composed of two characters: heart and gut.
The main cause of all disease is rooted in impaired diaphragm breathing, which can weaken our guts. Eighty percent of brain activity depends on the belly. Understanding how to be, and how to breathe mindfully, is the ultimate source of daily happiness and longevity. For optimal health, breathe into the belly, like a baby.
The terms “labored breathing” or “shortness of breath” refers to insufficient breathing that may happen frequently in daily modern life – during business talks, social dining, driving and even while sleeping. According to Eastern medicine, the main cause of all disease is rooted in impaired diaphragm breathing, which can weaken our guts. Mindful abdominal breathing and restful sleeping are key factors for increased circulation, metabolism, strengthened immune response and vital Chi or Prana. Slowing down the breath and returning to original belly breathing is the way to optimize diaphragm and respiratory system function.
In this class you will learn:
- how to assess the causes of your stress in daily life
- how to observe and assess diaphragmatic blockage
- how to engage Tanden (human’s vital center) with belly breathing
- how to calm the nervous system and ground your gut mind
- how to transform emotional stress into vitality
Belly breathing exercises, originated and developed by Buddha during his practice of penance, were later introduced by Hakuyu Sennin, a medicine man to the Zen monk Hakuin Zenji. These practices were cultivated and spread throughout Japan. “Tanden breathing” or “Zen breathing” along with Taoist wisdom can help awaken natural healing abilities and instinctive health awareness, for the benefit of all.
