How to Breathe Within:
Ancient Zen Healing Arts for Inner Purification
(4.5 hours)

Sunday, March 16
Noon – 4:30 PM

Taught by Yoshi Nakano (Instructor since 1989)

Breath is the most important biological activity for sustaining human life. Life and death can depend on how we breathe.
The Japanese letter () for the word breath is comprised of 2 characters: my heart and gut.  Healthy guts are vital to cognitive function.  80% of brain activity depends on the belly.  Understanding how to breath from our gut is the ultimate source of homeostatic systems, daily happiness and longevity.  How to breathe is how to be.  For optimal health, breath into the belly like a baby.

The terms “labored breathing” or “shortness of breath” refer to insufficient breathing that may happen frequently in daily modern life – during business talks, dining, driving, and even while sleeping.  According to Eastern medicine, the main cause of all disease is rooted in impaired diaphragm breathing, which can weaken our guts. Mindful abdominal breathing and restful sleeping are key factors for increased metabolism, strengthened immune response and activation of vital energy, chi or prana.  Slowing down the breath and returning to original belly breathing is the way to optimize diaphragmatic and respiratory function.

In this class you will learn:

  • how to relax the muscles and joints with somatic movement
  • how to observe and assess diaphragmatic blockage
  • how to engage Tanden (human’s vital center) for belly breathing
  • how to calm the nervous system in order to ground your center
  • how to transform emotional stress for your vitality
  • how to reset and embrace body/mind/spirit with meditative breathing

The Zen breathing method was originated and developed by Buddha during his practice of penance.  Hakayu Sennin, a medicine man, introduced the method to the Zen monk Hakuin Zenji to be cultivated and spread throughout Japan.  Tanden breathing or Zen breathing alongside Zen wisdom can help awaken your natural healing abilities and instinctive health awareness for the benefit of all.
